  1. The next workshop at Kari will be with Colin Beard. He is offering this workshop:
    PHOTOGRAPHY FOR ARTISTS
    Workshop description
The proposal is for a single three hour workshop conducted by Colin Beard in conjunction with the exhibition of photographs at the Kari Gallery in Kenilworth. The emphasis of the workshop will be to introduce students to techniques of photography that can be useful to visual artists of different persuasions.
Photography is an artistic medium in its own right having developed significantly during the twentieth century with practitioners such as Cartier-Bresson, Bill Brandt, Edward Steichen and many more. In Australia, photographers figure prominently in the top echelon of artists with people such as Bill Henson, Tracy Moffatt, Trent Parke and Tamara Dean. For artists of other media – painters, sculptors, printmakers and ceramicists – photography has served well in recording hard to remember details of faces and events that help to stimulate the memory. But perhaps most important of all, photography has provided a visual record of original and unique works of art as they leave the artists studio to hang in galleries and in the homes of new owners.
Very few visual artists have the necessary skills to adequately photograph their works. They either have to pay large fees to have them photographed professionally or they attempt to photograph the work on the back verandah. Most painters, sculptors. etc. do not possess the sophisticated lighting equipment used by professionals. They rely on the available light of the day unaware of the pitfalls waiting to compromise their efforts such as colour casts from the garden foliage, painted walls or the blue sky; paintings not squared; glaring highlights obscuring details; uneven light from one corner to another and, poor tonal and colour rendition due to inaccurate automatic camera exposure.
There are simple techniques in photography that one can use to deal with these issues and almost everyone has the necessary tools and resources within their home. The techniques covered will include basic camera craft; the understanding and creative use of light and its application in photography; techniques for photographing artistic works including two dimensional and three dimensional art work; and finally, a general introduction to photography as both a practical tool and as a creative and expressive art medium.
